The 25th edition of IFF Etiuda&Anima starts already on Tuesday, 20 November. We have before us 6 Festival days, filled with film screenings as well as encounters with remarkable guests. We have selected for you 10 events that you simply mustn't miss during Etiuda&Anima 2018.  

  1. “Yellow Submarine”, dir. George Dunning, UK/USA 1968, 88’
Special Guest – Paul Driessen 20th November (Tuesday), 8 p.m. Kijów Centrum, Al. Krasińskiego 34 The most popular animated music film in the history of motion picture turns 50!  
  1. THE ARTIST OF 25 YEARS OF FESTIVAL ETIUDA&ANIMA FOR JAN ŠVANKMAJER
10 best shorts by Jan Švankmajer 22nd November (Thursday), 5 p.m. & 8.15 p.m. Kijów Centrum, Al. Krasińskiego 34 5/10 – the first five short films by Jan Švankmajer 5 p.m. 5/10 – the first five short films by Jan Švankmajer 8.15 p.m. Presenting the Award of the 25th Anniversary of Etiuda&Anima Festival to Jan Švankmajer Special Guest – Jaromir Kalista, Veronika Hruba „Insect” (“Hmyz”), dir. In a small town, a troupe of actors rehearse a play by the Brother Čapek, “The Life Of Insects”. During the rehearsal, the personal lives of the actors blend with the destiny of the play’s characters.  
  1. Self-potraits of animation authors
Paul Driessen (Netherlands) Małopolski Ogród Sztuki, ul. Rajska 12 21st November (Wednesday), 6.30 p.m. Steven Woloshen (Canada)  Małopolski Ogród Sztuki, ul. Rajska 12 22nd November (Thursday), 6.30 p.m. Űlo Pikkov (Estonia) Małopolski Ogród Sztuki, ul. Rajska 12 23rd November (Friday), 5.30 p.m. In these interactive performances, artists meet the audience, talk about their work and reveal the secrets of their techniques.  
  1. ANIMA – international competition of animated films
20th – 24th November Małopolski Ogród Sztuki, ul. Rajska 12 ANIMA, the international contest of short animated films, will screen 61 animations selected out of the 1900 submitted ones. This competition will be judged by the jury headed by an Oscar nominee Paul Driessen, and the winners will be awarded Jabberwocky statuettes. As many as seven winners of the previous editions will compete for the Golden Jabberwocky. Each of the six competition screenings will open with a film by one of the Grand Prix winners; the first screening will also close with the latest film from one of the winners.  
  1. ETIUDA – intcompetition of international student films
20th – 24th November Małopolski Ogród Sztuki, ul. Rajska 12 ETIUDA, the oldest of the three, will feature 35 student films from 15 countries, which will be evaluated by a jury chaired by film director Janusz Kondratiuk.  
  1. “Another Day of Life”, dir. Damian Nenow, Raúl de la Fuente, PL/E/D/BE/HU 2018, 85’
22nd November (Thursday), 6.30 p.m. Kijów Centrum, Al. Krasińskiego 34 This is a gripping story of a three-month-long trip that renowned reporter Ryszard Kapuściński took across Angola ravaged by a war in which the front lines shifted like a kaleidoscope from one day to the next. This feature animated film is based on Ryszard Kapuściński’s book “Another Day of Life” (1976).  
  1. Between the Media
20th – 24th listopada Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts, Plac Matejki 13 Petr Skála (Czech Republic) Virgil Widrich (Austria) Wojciech Bąkowski (Poland) Łukasz Ronduda (Poland) The first edition of a new series “Between the Media” will appear, which will be devoted to artists from the sphere of multimedia.  
  1. “Fighting like cat and dog”,  dir. Janusz Kondratiuk, PL 2018, 102’
24th November (Saturday), 3 p.m. Kijów Centrum, Al. Krasińskiego 34

The latest film by Janusz Kondratiuk, the author of the unforgettable “Dziewczyny do wzięcia” (“Marriageable Girls”), is a bittersweet portrait of family relations, inspired by true events. Filled with ironic humour, the story follows the life of an unconventional family in which conflicts and rivalry are intertwined with moments of affection and authentic intimacy.  
  1. ANIMA.PL – competition of Polish animated films
21st  – 24th November Małopolski Ogród Sztuki, ul. Rajska 12 ANIMA.PL, the Polish animated film contest (held for the second time) will include 40 films out of over 100 submissions. The jury chaired by a Polish filmmaker and teacher Hieronim Neumann, will present the winners in this category with Żmij statuettes.  
  1. „Seder-Masochism”, dir. Nina Paley, USA 2018, 78’
Kijów Centrum, Al. Krasińskiego 34 21st November (Wednesday), 6 p.m. Kijów Centrum, Al. Krasińskiego 34 22nd November (Thursday), 3.30 p.m.

This second animated feature from Nina Paley is a completely irreverent, occasionally hilarious and politically evocative look at the most famous of Jewish holidays.
