Signe Baumane is one of the most groundbreaking female animation creators. On 22. IFF Etiuda&Anima she is going to appear in a cycle ‘Animator’s self-portraits’ and speak about her creative process.
Signe Baumane (born in 1964) is an Lithuanian artist living currently in New York. She outstandingly combines a traditional animation technique with an untrammelled imagination and contentious subjects. Her stories involves such issues as a human sexuality or newest East-European history. She often uses her very special style to play with thematics of sex and relationships.
The artist employs an unique, beautifully textured combination of papier-mache stop-motion and classic hand-drawn animation. Characters in her movies are treated as a very malleable material – flexible, stretchy and pliant. A material that in spite of an external pressure always comes to its original shape. Baumane invites us to an inner world of the characters, complicated and filled with uninvited creatures – anthropomorphous animals.
In 2014 IFF Etiuda&Anima presented Baumane’s full-lenght animated film ‘Rocks in my pockets’. This year the artist is going to appear in Cracow personally and reveal some secrets of her creative process. During an extraordinary presentation she is going to unveil all the phases of her work and make a whole film in front of the audience.
