The Boy and the Heron

Added: September 24, 2024

Hayao Miyazaki returns after a decade with another visionary animation. His new, Oscar-winning film is a moving and timeless story about growing up, loss and love.

Still from animation The Boy and the Heron

After his mother's death, Mahito leaves Tokyo with his father and moves to the countryside. Distanced from the new reality surrounding him, he begins to discover the unexplored area and his new home. One day, he accidentally meets a mysterious gray heron speaking with a human voice, which unexpectedly becomes his guide. The bird gradually helps the boy unravel the mystery of life, taking him to a magical world where the past mixes with the present. The film from Studio Ghibli is also an interesting story about family problems and finding one's role within it.

Hayao Miyazaki is a rare example of an animator who stubbornly decides to use a pencil and crayon instead of a cursor. His latest film shimmers with beautiful, even calligraphic detail, reminiscent of fairy tale illustrations, making it worth watching just for the sake of the fantastic world created in it.

Hayao Miyazaki (1941)

A film director, screenwriter, editor and Japanese producer, specializing in animated films (anime), as well as a cartoonist and comic book creator (mangaka). He is a graduate of Gakushuin University. He began his professional career as an animator in Toei Douga (1963). In 1984, he made the anime titled Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Kaze no tani Naushika), based on the manga of the same title, which he had started 2 years earlier. The film's success led him to founding, together with Isao Takahata, the famous Tokyo Studio Ghibli.

Miyazaki's films have enjoyed enormous popularity and critical acclaim for years. Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi, 2001) was awarded with the Golden Bear in Berlin and the Oscar in 2003, and Howl's Moving Castle (Hauru no ugoku shiro, 2004) received an Oscar nomination in 2006. Original visuals, the ability to tell stories through images, as well as poetry and extraordinary sensitivity - these are the main features of Hayao Miyazaki's artwork. The Boy and the Heron is the first animated film in history to receive the Oscar, Golden Globe and BFTA awards at the same time.
