How different is it to create animation for interactive VR? What needs to be adapted in terms of script, storyboard, layout, background, compositing, production, sound design, editing, rhythm, and storytelling in general? How do new factors, such as interactivity, game engines, various hardware, programming, player agency, and spatiality, come into play? This masterclass is a comprehensive compendium of dos and don'ts in the immersive field, gained through years of craft and experimentation in the making of the multi-award-winning VR piece From The Main Square.
Pedro Harres - he is a Berlin-based Brazilian director, scriptwriter, and multimedia artist. He studied film, animation, and philosophy. His work spans a wide range of imagery and formats, including installations, films, and XR. Among his notable projects, Castillo y el Armado, his first animated short, garnered 55 awards and recognitions worldwide, including an Oscar qualification.
From The Main Square, his Master's thesis at the Film Universitaet Babelsberg and debut in interactive VR, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival in 2022 and had a solid festival career. A consistent feature throughout his work is the allegorical use of space—considered not only as a backdrop for the mise-en-scène, but as a narrative layer that deepens storytelling, encourages reflection, and ultimately redefines the artwork.
