It is with profound sadness that we received the news of the passing of Bogusław Zmudziński, founder and longtime Artistic Director of the Etiuda&Anima International Film Festival, an outstanding film scholar, academic, cultural organiser, and a man who devoted his life to cinema.

Bogusław Zmudziński

7.05.1951 – 4.07.2026

It was thanks to his passion, courage, and vision that the Etiuda Festival was established in 1994. Over time, it evolved into the Etiuda&Anima International Film Festival. For more than three decades, the festival became a meeting place for filmmakers, students, artists, and audiences from around the world, growing into one of the leading international festivals dedicated to student cinema and auteur animation.

Bogusław Zmudziński was a respected film scholar, Doctor of Philosophy, lecturer at the AGH University of Krakow and the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. He was also a member of ASIFA, the Polish Filmmakers Association, and a longtime expert for the Polish Film Institute. His achievements were recognised with numerous honours, including the Gold Medal for Long Service and the Honoris Gratia distinction awarded by the City of Kraków.

To our Foundation, he will be remembered above all as a person of extraordinary sensitivity, immense knowledge, and an enduring curiosity about the world. He inspired others, recognised talent, and shared his deep love of cinema with everyone around him. Thanks to his dedication, thousands of young filmmakers were given the opportunity to present their work, while generations of audiences discovered the richness of animation and auteur cinema.

Today, the Festival is created by successive generations of people brought together by a shared passion for film. Many of us first met here. It was thanks to Bogusław Zmudziński that this community came into being, and it continues to shape the spirit of Etiuda&Anima to this day. For that, we will always remain deeply grateful.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of working with him and sharing his passion for cinema.

Thank you, Bogusław. Your vision, your work, and the values you instilled in the Festival will live on through every future edition of Etiuda&Anima.
