Closing gala

24th edition of the International Film Festival Etiuda&Anima is coming to an end. We invite you for the festival’s Closing Gala that will be followed by an award ceremony and screenings of the winning films.       The last day of the Etiuda&Anima festival will end with an exciting evening. It will start at 8 p.m. in Kijów Centrum with the grand Closing Gala, during which the winners of the ETIUDA Competition, ANIMA Competition and our first ANIMA.PL Competition will be announced. During this year’s edition of the festival, 32 films from all over the world entered the competition for the Golden, Silver and Brown Dinosaur (ETIUDA) and as many as 69 filmmakers competed for the Golden, Silver and Brown Jabberwocky (ANIMA). 43 Polish animated films qualified for ANIMA.PL competition for the Golden, Silver and Brown Żmij. In addition, the best film school will be awarded with the Special Golden Dinosaur and the best animated student etude will receive the Special Golden Jabberwocky. Apart from the prestigious diplomas, the winners will be also granted financial prizes. The artistic director of the festival, Bogusław Zmudziński, will give a personal award – the Great (Under)Estimated – for a film of his choice. Selected films will also receive the Audience Award and the Student Jury Award.   The awarded films will be screened during the Gala after the award ceremony. A pool of tickets for the Closing Gala is also available to the viewers. A meeting with Bodo Kox

On Sunday, the last day of the Etiuda&Anima Festival, we present you with a great oppurtunity: a screening of the latest Bodo Kox' movie, "The Man with the Magic Box" - a haunting futuristic love story. It will take place at the Kijow Centrum and after the screening, there will be a meeting with the director himself, the great Bodo Kox.    Czlowiek z magicznym pudelkiem   “The Man with the Magix Box” (“Człowiek z magicznym pudełkiem”, 2017) is the second, after “Girl from the Closet” (“Dziewczyna z szafy”, 2012), professional film made by the ex-leader of the Polish off-cinema. Extraordinary comedy about time travel and love able to cross any borders of time and space. Warsaw, 2030. It might seem that for Adam his best tomorrow happened yesterday... Suffering from amnesia of unknown origin, the protagonist needs to start everything from scratch. He changes apartments and starts work in a corporation. At work he meets an attractive Goria, by whom he is deeply enchanted. At first the girl resists his courtship, claiming stubbornly that he is not her type. However, when the romance develops, the young man makes a discovery. In his new apartment he finds an old radio still broadcasting programs from 1950s. As it turns out, the radio also emits waves enabling teleportation. During one of his time travels, Adam „gets stuck” in 1952. Goria, worried about her sweetheart’s absence, sets out on a fascinating, but dangerous mission to get him back.   The film screening will be followed by Bodo Kox’s meeting with the audience led by Łukasz Wojtusik.   26th November (Sunday), 05.00 pm.   Filipova creates extraordinary animations from an ostensibly ordinary point of view. It seems that there is nothing valuable in what a child or an animal has to say. However, she decides to use their point of view to tell the story. This way of presenting makes the viewers see much more. The world functioning according to its own simple rules seen with the eyes of little Sarah (Sarah’s Tale, 2006). Family relations and the pain of the longing in Where dogs die (2011), where the protagonist is a dog. Results of the combination of love, politics and human fates shown in Three Love Stories (2007) from the point of view of tenderhearted poet and in Brut (2014)  depicting the Prague Ghetto through the eyes of a dog. Seemingly infantile contents is completed with aesthetics of Svetlana’s works – she works with simple forms – child drawings and sand painting.   The participants of the meeting are going to have an opportunity not only to talk with the artist, but also try to take and understand her point of view during the live show of sand-painted movie creation.

25 editions of the International Animated Film Workshops

Many well-known and esteemed animation artists from around the world, i.a. our this year’s Self-Portraitists – Géza M. Tóth, Claudius Gentinetta and Svetlana Filippova – participated in the International Animated Film Workshops that took place in Kraków and Lanckorona. The workshops are run by prof. Jerzy Kucia from the very beginning and each edition is highlighted by visits of outstanding artists, pedagogues, critics and film theorists.    Printed Rainbow

  The International Animated Film Workshops (originally named the Krakow Animated Film Workshops) were founded in 1996 by Myriam Prongue from Pro Helvetia East/West Foundation, prof. Jerzy Kucia, who was at that time leading the Animated Film Studio at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts, and Bogusław Zmudziński, the Director of the International Film Festival Etiuda. In the first three years the workshops took place twice a year in Krakow, starting from 1999, however, once a year only, usually around the time of Etiuda Festival. Since many years the workshops, which take place in September in Lanckorona, have been organized by the Association of Authors of Animated, Experimental and Video Film STUDIO A and a German partner DIAF – Deutsches Institut Fur Animationsfilm. At present the organization of workshops is financially supported also by: the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Polish Film Insititute, the City of Krakow and Polish Filmmakers Association. From their very beginnings, the artistic leader of the International Animated Film Workshops has been prof. Jerzy Kucia. The International Animated Film Workshops in Krakow is an artistic event and undertaking responding to the needs and expectations of contemporary art and its creators, especially the artists of younger generations. Young animation authors prepare and develop concepts for their films under guidance of esteemed experts from Poland and abroad. They consult their artistic projects and gain practical skills. In principle the AFW are more like master workshops than a form of school education. – the workshops intend to help in shaping artistic personalities of their participants, defining the artistic idea of a film and film language further, as well as preparing film for production. Such activities support young authors and their artistic development. The workshops create conditions to prepare and elaborate projects and initiate their production and distribution. I have been leading the workshops from their very beginnings in 1996, deciding about their formula and direction of evolution determined by everchanging conditions and development of technology. I have a pleasure of inviting some of the most outstanding animation authors and professionals to act as guest pedagogues and collaborate and share their experience, artistic ideas and skills with the workshops’ participants. Feature animated films

We invite you to Kijów Centrum for Saturday's screenings of full - time animations from last season: „Ethel & Ernest”, „Loving Vincent”, „Revengeance”.   „Ethel & Ernest” Ethel & Ernest A film based on a well-known book for children by British author and illustrator Raymond Briggs. Roger Mainwood, one of the top animators of Great Britain, made a hand-drawn animated film which succeeds in recreating the spirit of the story and illustrations by Briggs, both in terms of their colours and structure. “Ethel and Ernest” tells the humorous and heart-warming story of Briggs’ own parents – a milkman Ernest and a lady’s maid Ethel, two ordinary Londoners living in a highly stratified society. The film follows their lives from their first chance meeting in 1928, through the birth of their son in the beginnig of 1930s, to their deaths, within months of each other, in 1971. It also depicts, through Ethel and Ernest’s eyes, all the most defining moments of the first half of the 20th century: the Great Depression, World War II, post war austerity, cultural enlightenment of the 1960s and landing on the Moon. The couple shared 40 years of love, common life and tea drinking. Mainwood’s animation is a tribute to ordinary people in extraordinary times. The author gained his experience at London Animation Studio TVC where he worked on numerously awarded animated films: “The Snowman” (based on Brigg’s story, too), “Father Christmas” and “When the Wind Blows”. His animation for children titled Meg and Mog was nominated for BAFTA Children’s Awards. When working on Ethel and Ernest, he was joined by the international team of talents including such widely acknowledged actors who dubbed the film’s main title characters as Oscar winner Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn.   Ethel & Ernest Director: Roger Mainwood, Great Britain 2016, animation, 94 min.   25th November (Saturday), 01.00 pm. Kijów Centrum – Large Screening Room     „Loving Vincent” Loving Vincent / Loving Vincent The most renowned film of the season advertised as the world’s first fully painted animated feature film. The work, which was inspired by more than 120 Vincent van Gogh’s paintings, is composed of 65 000 frames in oil paints on canvas board painted by 125 artists faithfully reproducing Van Gogh’s expressive painting style and later animated with 12 frames per second. Made as a crime story with its plot based on the artist’s letters to his brother Theo, the film poses a question about the reasons for van Gogh’s premature death. Armand Roulin, a son of a postman Joseph Roulin, is talking with characters from van Gogh’s famous paintings and trying to solve the mystery of death of the outstanding painter whose art remained unappreciated during his life time. “Loving Vincent” (“Twój Vincent”) was made by a Polish and British directing duo: Dorota Korbiela, a painter and film director, and Hugh Welchman, a film producer who was responsible for the production of the Oscarwinning “Peter and the Wolf” by Suzie Templeton. In Polish version of the film the characters are dubbed by, among others: Jerzy Stuhr, Danuta Stenka, Olga Frycz, Zofia Wichłacz i Robert Więckiewicz. The film received the audience award at the film festival in Annecy in 2017 and attracted a lot of attention of distributors from all over the world right after its premiere. Loving Vincent Directors: Dorota Kobiela, Hugh Welchman, Poland/Great Britain 2017, animation, 91 min.   25th November (Saturday), 03.00 pm. Kijów Centrum – Large Screening Room     „Revengeance” Rod Rosse ”The One Man Posse”, a bounty hunter, gets entangled in a web of danger when he takes on a job from a U.S. senator named ”Deathface”. His task is to kill a girl who has stolen some parcel. Bill Plympton, a 70-year old king of independent animation who was nominated for Oscar for his films Your face and Guard dog joined forces with Jim Lujan, a talented underground artist of the young generation. The result of this collaboration – Revengeance, is a powerful satire and a pin-sharp comedy whose style refers to underground comic books from the 1960s and 70s. Revengeance is Plympton’s eighth feature animated film and the first one upon which he collaborated with another artist. This collaboration may not have happened, though. The story goes that Lujan gave Plympton a DVD with his film during Comic Con in San Diego. The animation veteran did what he usually does with all the gifts he receives from young animation authors – he put the disc on a shelf. It stayed there until one lazy, rainy afternoon when Plympton finally watched Lujan’s DVD and immediately fell in love with the young animator’s style. Both artists undoubtedly share similar stylistics, sense of humour and artistic sensitivity. There are definitely more similarities than differences between them. As a result, the duo have created a grotesque image of the U.S. which at times seems to be surprisingly valid. Lujan and Plympton complete each other – Lujan’s crazy characters together with his dynamic and jumbled plots perfectly supplement Plympton’s visual ingenuity in deforming reality.   Revengeance Directors: Bill Plympton, Jim Lujan, USA 2016, animation, 75 min.   25th November (Saturday), 10.00 pm. The Themersons – the art of life

On Saturday there will be a screening of the Themersons’ films.  The couple’s work largely contributed to the film avant-garde movement which took place in the first half of the 20th century. We invite you to Pauza in Garden as well where you can see an exhibition called “Franciszka and Stefan Themerson. The urge to create visions – scene 5”.   Stefan Themerson i język   ‘Nature gave us vocal chords but neglected to give us a light-producing organ. We had to build it ourselves: The projective luminiferous eye.’

  „The Adventures of a Good Citizen” (1937) This film was lost during the war. One print was found somewhere near Moscow and sent to the Film Archive in Warsaw. The print was old and badly battered. Hence the quality of the present reduction from the original 35mm to 16mm is not perfect. But it could have been worse. There are two sentences spoken in Polish. At the beginning the CARPENTER shouts to one of the two men with a wardrobe: ‘The sky won’t fall in if you walk backwards!’ This is overheard (over the telephone) by THE GOOD CITIZEN (a civil servant) who also decides to try walking backwards. In the street, he collides with TWO MEN WITH THE WARDROBE, and now it is he and one of the other two who carry the wardrobe backwards out of the town and into the forest. A group of people (representing a cross-section of society) march with banners to protest against walking backwards. Inscriptions on the banners read: DOWN WITH WALKING BACKWARDS! THE SKY WILL FALL IN! FORWARD MARCH, EVERYBODY! The Polish words appearing at the end of the film mean: ONE MUST UNDERSTAND THE METAPHOR, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. — S.T.   „Calling Mr Smith” (1943) In 1938 Stefan and Franciszka Themerson, leading figures in Polish avant-garde cinema, left Warsaw for Paris. In 1942 they came to England and worked for the rest of the war in the Film Unit of the Polish Ministry of Information and Documentation in London. “Calling Mr Smith”, made in 1943, calls on ‘Mr Smith’ to support the war effort as an anti-fascist struggle, illustrating its appeal with examples of Nazi oppression in Poland.   „The Eye& The Ear” (1937) Four types of visual interpretation of four songs by Karol Szymanowski, Polish words by Julian Tuwim.   There will also be a screening of two documentary movies about the Themersons:   „Stephan + Franciszka” (1975, dir. Tomasz Pobóg-Malinowski) Author of a film presents the Themersons and their artistc output. It is the only documentary film made during the artists’ lives. „Stefan Themerson and Language” (1976, dir. Erik van Zuylen) The film is an attempt at providing the explanation of the idea of semantic poetry. Its protagonist is Stefan Themerson, a poet. A detective (K. Schippers) is leading an investigation on this unusual poetry genre and its author. A docudrama in which the author acquaints the audience with some of the concepts of Stefan Themerson’s philosophy of la anguage by means of a dialogue. The film makes use of fragments of a novel ”Bayamus” (1945).     25th November (Saturday), 08.00 pm. Malopolska Garden of Arts – Small Screening Room   Exhibition “Franciszka and Stefan Themerson. The urge to create visions – scene 5” The exhibition presents the film output of Franciszka and Stefan Themerson, the most important representatives of the film avantgarde of 1930s and 1940s. Sławomir Idziak – Winner of Special Golden Dinosaur

Already on Friday on Etiuda&Anima Festiwal Sławomir Idziak will get Special Golden Dinosaur - special award, because not only appreciating the works of winner, but also his work on education on movie animation.    Sławomir Idziak   A circle of almost twenty winners of the Special Golden Dinosaur, an award of the Etiuda&Anima festival for an outstanding artist and pedagogue, extends this year with the brilliant, world-renowned cinematographer Sławomir Idziak. Thereby for the first time in the history of our award it will be presented to an artist from outside of the circle of feature and documentary film directors as well as animation authors. Sławomir Idziak is one of the most acclaimed Polish cinematographers in the world, winner of numerous festival awards, an Oscar nominee for Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down (2001). He was born in 1945 in Katowice in a family of many generations of photographers. He studied at the Direction of Photography Department at the Polish National Film School in Lodz. In the 1970s he was the cinematographer, among others, in films by Krzysztof Zanussi, Wojciech Marczewski and Janusz Zaorski. At the same time he tried his hand at directing by making his own films, such as Paper Bird (Papierowy ptak, 1972), The Flying Lesson (Nauka latania, 1978) and The Screening (Seans, 1978). A breakthrough in his career as cinematographer was the artistic meeting with Krzysztof Zanussi, and, first of all, with Krzysztof Kieslowski, with whom he frequently collaborated since the Pedestrian Subway (Przejście podziemne, 1973), the director’s feature debut. Together, they later made The Scar (Blizna, 1976) and the fifth episode of The Decalogue (Dekalog), which, in time, took the form of a full length film A Short Film about Killing (Krótki film o zabijaniu, 1987). Finally, they achieved world success with the films The Double Life of Veronique (Podwójne życie Weroniki, 1991) and the Three Colors Trilogy. Blue (Trzy kolory. Niebieski, 1993). Awarded a Grand Prix Golden Lion at the festival in Venice and the award for cinematography in the Blue marked the beginning of the cinematographer’s international career, crowned by an Oscar nomination as well as awards for lifetime achievements including, among others, the Polish Film Award Eagle (2002), and the Special Award at the Camerimage Film Festival (2006). Sławomir Idziak has worked as a pedagogue for years, running workshops for both aspiring filmmakers and professionals. He prides himself on his beloved brainchild, workshops Film Spring Open, organized for over a dozen years. Hundreds of trainees representing many countries take part in the event and make use of the very well equipped Cinebus. In this way this outstanding Polish cinematographer manages to combine his vast professional experience with his passion for teaching.

  Claudius Gentinetta, a Swiss animation author, participated in the 1st edition of Krakow Animated Film Workshops organized in 1996 by Pro Helvetia Foundation, Animated Film Studio of  the Academy of Fine Arts of Krakow and the International Film Festival Etiuda. Gentinetta, born in 1968 in Lucerne, got interested in animated film already in his childhood. He studied design and animation in Lucerne, Liverpool and Kassel. In 1995, he spent a year-long Artest Foundation fellowship in Krakow, with the additional support by Pro Helvetia Foundation. His early films seem to be rooted in Gentinetta’s fascination with various film genres, as the time passed, however, his interests centered on social issues. While staying in Krakow, as Christina Schlatter writes, Gentinetta ”for the first time used a knife to scrape light into a black surface which had previously been applied in black ink on a film in order to create his animation “Hysteria” (2000)”. When he came back from Poland, the artist made an eerie and dark film “Poldek” (2004) inspired by his recording of piteous howling of a little dog and the look of Krakow’s backyards. An exhausting experience of a hotel neighbour’s snoring inspired another Gentinetta’s film “Sleep” (2010). An authentic recording of snoring sounds stimulated artist’s imagination which created  some dream figures floating on waves of snores. Sleep brought the artist the Grand Prix of the ANIMA competition – The Golden Jabberwocky at the Etiuda&Anima 2010. Personal and family experiences of the artist, who each year spends a few weeks on the Irish island of Sherkin near Baltimore, contributed to the making of Gentinetta’s latest, already known in Krakow and regarded as the most poetic of all his films – “The Islander’s Rest” (2015). It tells of a generational change, becoming an adult, saying goodbye and death. An evening with Kōji Yamamura and Toranoko P.A.C.

We’re proud to present you with quite a remarkable event in the Małopolski Ogród Sztuki. The Toranoko Group will present a performance of Muybridge’s Strings and the Rhythm of Movement” inspired by Kōji Yamamura’s film. After the performance there will be a retrospective of the Japanese artist.   Toranoko   Kōji Yamamura is a well-known figure at the Etiuda&Anima Festival. He visits us for the third time: before he took part in „Self-portraits of animation authors” and was a juror of the ANIMA competition. This edition there will be a retrospective of his work during which we will screen his short films: Oscar-nominated „Mt. Head” (2002), „Old Crocodile” (2005), „Franz Kafka’s a Country Doctor” (2007), „A  Child’s Metaphysics” (2007), „Satie’s Parade” (2016) as well as „Notes on Monstropedia” (2016) – a film that takes part in the ANIMA competition this year. The retrospective will be preceded by a performance by the group Toranoko P.A.C., inspired by one of the artist’s films entitled “Muybridge’s Strings and the Rhythm of Movement”. Can time be made to stand still? Can it be reversed? Koji Yamamura’s film is a meditation on this theme, contrasting the worlds of the photographer Eadweard Muybridge, who in 1878 successfully photographed consecutive phases in the movement of a galloping horse, and a mother who, watching her daughter grow up, realizes she is slipping away from her. Moving between California and Tokyo, between the nineteenth and the twenty-first century, the film focuses on some of the highpoints in Muybridge’s troubled life and intercuts them with the mother’s surrealistic daydreams – a poetic clash that explores the irrepressible human desire to seize life’s fleeting moments, to freeze the instants of happiness. Georges Méliès and Theatrum Magicum

During such festival as Etiuda&Anima there simply must be some kind of event combining both film and music. We invite you all to a screening of Georges Méliès’ movies with live music of guitarist Kuba Duda, as well as to a screening of “Theatrum Magicum”, a remarkable project of Marcin Giżycki, inspired by work of Jan Potocki.   Georges Méliès was a cinematography pioneer. He was an amazing film director and a prestidigitator. The screening of his films, which were kindly lend to us by National Film Achieve of Prague, is a real find for film enthusiasts.  The films speak volumes about the true genius of their maker, as well as  about the level of his creative invention and imagination. An additional attraction is a music performance of a guitarist - Kuba Duda - during the film screening. The second part of the evening is going to focus on „Theatrum Magicum”, a film directed by Marcin Giżycki. As the director says himself, the idea for the movie came to him in 2007 which is nearly 100 years after Méliès made his. Giżycki wanted to make a silent movie. This 24-minutes long film required huge amount of work, a big number of crew members, numerous costumes, as well as a considerable budget. And it is definitely worth it.

  Theatrum Magicum   A vague idea for the film Theatrum Magicum, even without a title, emerged soon after an animators conference which I organized in 2007 at the Łańcut Castle. Wit Wójtowicz, the director of the museum and a great animated film lover, let us meet in the court theatre, in which count Jan Potocki, author of The Manuscript Found in Saragossa (Rękopis znaleziony w Saragossie) staged his short plays called The Parades (Parady), in 1792, to the delight of the castle dwellers. In the  meantime, the Quay brothers, who also participated in the conference, were working on their impression document Inventorium of Traces, in which they looked for some traces of the count`s presence in the castle chambers. Having watched this interesting and unconventional film, I thought that I would look for the spirit of Jan Potocki in the theatre, little displayed in the film by the famous twins from London. That is why I again reached for inspiration to my favourite read, namely The Parades, and the idea for a film started to materialize quickly. The count`s plays are based predominantly on funny, absurd dialogues (yet they do not lack situational humour, whose elements were also transferred to the film). However, I preferred a silent film and I did not want to make yet another adaptation of many-times- performed one-act plays. But the characters seemed colourful enough for me not to want to give them up. And so I borrowed them from the count and made them members of an itinerant prestidigitator`s troupe; however, I left the relationships between them just as they were in Potocki`s play.  Kasander, a burgher, became the prestidigitator, but Zerzabella, his amorous daughter, Gil - a servant in love with her, and Zerzabella`s admirer, Leander, were taken straight from The Parades. And if we have a prestidigitator on stage, a professional association with Georges Méliès appears naturally. However, it did not stop at literary and film associations, as our Méliès takes certain things after baron Münchhausen from Gustave Doré`s illustration.

Marcin Giżycki

  KUBA DUDA     Kuba Duda is a young guitarist and the author of instrumental music, which leaves space for your thoughts and imaginations to flow freely. During solo acts he plays his own compositions on guitar using various techniques and effects. His cloudy noir style of playing reminds masters of improvised solo guitar like Marc Ribot, Aram Bajakian and Raphael Rogiński. He opened two concerts in Cracow for Jozef Van Wissem – lute player and the author of music score for Jim Jarmusch’s movie „Only Lovers Left Alive”. Some listeners compare the mood of his music to soundtracks from David Lynch's and Jim Jarmusch's movies, which had large influence on his style. To enrich solo acts he screens old film reels on analog projectors, which make the atmosphere even more dreamy. In march 2017 he released instrumental solo album which was recorded at home. Compositions are untitled, numbered only with Roman numerals. They tell stories without the words and listeners can  interpret them on their own. Beside solo acts he plays with the band Patrick The Pan. The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, The Who – all these legends of 20th century rock music will be shown in the documentary „All My Loving” (1968). The director, Tony Palmer had an opportunity to meet them. He have seen the counterculture of 1960s and 70s with his own eyes and immortalized it all on the movies. Géza M. Tóth – Hungarian self-portrait

  “Animated film directors’ self-portraits” is a section that allows the public to observe the film making process. They say that voyeurism gives us the most pleasure when the object we’re observing is unavailable for the voyeur. Even though it may be the case, our guests will certainly not agree with this statement because they can take pleasure not only from the mere observing of the animation masters but also from the direct contact with the master him- or herself. Géza M. Tóth is a master in his field. His „subtle, almost sandy animations about freedom” – „Icar” (1998), „Ergo” (2008), his educating works targeted at younger audiences – „Berry and Dolly” (2013) as well as his expressional, stylistically varied adaptations of  well-known works, such as „The Miraculous Mandarin” (2006) are some of his best works. When talking about Tóth it is also impossible not to mention his „incredibilities”: animations with a mystery and a message [„Mama” (2009), „Maestro” (2005)]. The films of Tóth’s are truly diversified. The question is... how does he do it? Maybe from up-close the public will finally be able to unveil the very secret of his amazingly varied works.

ANIMA.PL 2017 Competition

  Announcing the first edition of the ANIMA.PL competition, we were anxious to see if and how the Polish filmmakers would surprise us. Animation can be a very powerful tool that reaches the core of our feelings, affects us on many layers of imagination, unfolds new universes before our eyes, often balancing on the verge of reality and fiction. We were impressed by the puppet animation creating a world filled with insecurity and threat in Ucieczka by Jarosław Konopka; by the tense story of life and death evoked in Wcielenie by Barbara Rupik; by the picture of everyday life, typical to many Polish block estates, painted by Karolina Borgiasz in Na językach. Animations selected for the competition – created by students, independent artists as well as professional filmmakers – touched a broad spectrum of themes. Films addressed to the youngest audience had a moralistic undertone, presented very skilfully, without infantilization. We feel that, thanks to the talented artists of young and middle generation, Polish children animation slowly regains its former glory. Using a simple line, Karolina Specht in Wyjdę z siebie explores our sometimes desperate need to see somebody else in another human. We are also witnesses to a relationship between mother and son (O Matko!), son and father (W tramwaju), emotional partnership (Wieczór), journey into the counciousness of the main character (Dziwny przypadek), story set in the outer space (Czerń) animated adaptation of Lem's novel (Doradcy Króla Hydropsa), horror-inspired animation (Sklep z rybami), black comedy (Bankiet) and a road story of a dead Viking (Droga do Nilfheim). There is an outstanding section of films on women directed by women: Figury niemożliwe i inne historie II, XOXO pocałunki i uściski, Cipka, Locus, Ucieczki. We cannot omit two animated videoclips: Odessa and Ponura tresura. Personally, I keep my fingers crossed for the animation Zjazd (by Jerzy Tabor), which is very sophisticated in its simplicity and refers to the best traditions of the Polish School of Animation. We hope that the animated feast, prepared by the Polish artists, and the menu, composed by the selection panel of the 24th IFF Etiuda&Anima, will taste delightful to our dear jury and invaluable viewers, who are our best critics, attending our festival for years. Herz Frank was born into a poor Jewish family in 1923. His father passed his passion for photography onto his son, which led him to filmmaking. In one of the interviews, Frank stated that his driving force was an ability to amaze at the beauty of the world. He kept this attitude until his death in 2013. In Frank's eyes, not every motion picture deserved to be called a “film”. It could become one only when the camera revealed the soul and the truth of a human and the director was able to capture it. This philosophy was expressed in his unusual sensitivity on light and his choice of a black-and-white film tape that – in Frank's opinion – gave him a possibility to convey a universal message. One could say that he created films based on sensation and sorrow: “Supreme Court” (1988) – a conversation with a man sentenced to death; “Diagnosis” (1975) – a post-mortem examination; “The Song of Songs” (1989) – an exhausting childbirth, “Beyond the Fear” (2015) – a story of a murderer and a woman who leaves her husband to be with him. One can obviously take these films literally. However, Frank – through numerous, often Biblical contexts – encouraged his viewers to look for the sacrum, for the salvation that comes from suffering. Through such lens, we can see what makes these films universal – a Human.

Tony Palmer at the Etiuda&Anima Festival

Viewers of the Etiuda&Anima Festival will have an unique occasion to meet live Tony Palmer, legend of British music films, who encountered in his creative activity with giants of the 20th century's rock music, i.a. members of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Leonard Cohen, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Eric Clapton.   Tony Palmer   On Wednesday, 22th of November at the Malopolska Garden of Arts we are going to show you two documents from the time when Tony Palmer was filming rock stars: „Bird on a Wire” (1972/2010), which show the light and dark moments of Leonard Cohen’s European tour of 1972. Considered lost for a long time, the film was restored from 296 film canisters found after many years in one of Hollywood’s warehouses. It presents the legendary poet and singer on tour promoting his great album ”Songs of Love and Hate”; and „The Beatles and War World II” (1972/2016) – Tony Plamer’s latest, pacifistic music film, which collect a group of all the most famous artist from the 1970s, such as Elton John, Tina Turner, The Four Seasons, Bee Gees, Bryan Ferry, Rod Stewart and make them sing the covers of the Beatles most famous songs. At the same day we have for you an extraordinary surprise - our Special Guest couldn't missed  opportunity to the most frequently connection with viewers of Etiuda&Anima, so he asked for possibility to announce his movie about Leonard Cohen „Bird on a Wire” (Wednesday, 07.00 pm.). On Thursday, 23th of November we invite you to Malopolska Garden of Arts to watch the show of „All My Loving” (1968) – a groundbreaking documentary from the 1960s that initially sat on a shelf for quite some time only to be acclaimed as‘a psychedelic experience which 10 years from now will be the definitive document of its time’ already at the time of its original broadcast in 1968. ETIUDA Contest 2017

  I must admit, there was a time, when I were speaking negatively of the student-made movies. Obviously, I have not seen to omany of them. Now this changed and I know that the best ones – the ones presented in the Etiuda contest – can be very satisfying. For example, Plica Polonica, movie that uses the history for building a narration for contemporary issues. Or Days of the War, where the author looks into the past to express his concern about contemporary conflicts. The first one is example of documentary cinema, very widely represented this year. This is reflected in the form – cold and minimalistic Eventide, next to hybrid Place to Be, and the content – everyday life in the little village at the Arctic Circle in Without Sun next to music of the ants in Symbiophony. More outstanding pieces – Attak, the story of street fighters using match-making app similar to Tinder, mining archival resources from beginning of digital era Digital Immigrants and an unusual image of motherhood in Regretting Motherhood. The second one shows that for students intimate situations, clever shortcut, nice metaphor or well-chosen form of film are much more interesting than sensationalism, straightforwardness and moralising and gives an opportunity to tell a story in a strong and inspiring way. That is why they talk about migration crisis in new-wave style (Fedra) or with a harsh sense of humour (Staying with Friends), about depression through the absurd (A Gentle Noise Between the Lines), about social agression in toned-down words (Greetings from Kropsdam), about society issues as in a wacky comedy (The Test), about Hamlet surrounded by garbage (Ham). Only a conflict between son and his mother were placed traditionally in a horror standard (Ma?). Short movies prove, that students are ambitious (ambition suit students like a cigarette), courageous and have a fresh look at things. From short movies you can also learn whether is it worthwile to get yourself circumcised, what colour of the lipstick works best for Russian man, what leg should you start with when you put on an latex suit and why is it a good idea to sleep on the sunbed when the world falls apart. What more can you wish for?
