Teaser of 31st IFF Etiuda&Anima

The International Film Festival Etiuda&Anima, this year taking place in October, will present a wide range of ambitious and unconventional film works from all over the world. You will be able to attend meetings with outstanding artists, thematic reviews, latest full-length animations, an extensive block of industry events, and - in the competition part - three different competition sections.

From almost 3 thousand films created in the last two years and submitted to the Festival, the selection committees chose the best ones. They will be shown in three competition sections: ETIUDA competition showing the best short fiction and documentary films from film and art schools around the world, ANIMA competition including most interesting professional, student and independent animations from around the world, and finally ANIMA.PL competition featuring Polish short animated films. Full lists of films qualified for the competition will be announced on August 31, 2024.

The festival will begin with the Polish premiere of the Latvian candidate for an Oscar – the animation Flow by Gints Zilbalodis. During this year's edition, we will host wonderful artists among which are director and producer Peter Lord, founder of the legendary British studio Aardman (the home of such iconic plasticine animation characters as Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep) who will lead his masterclass or Oscar-nominated Czech animator Michaela Pavlátová, who will be awarded the prize for an artist combining creative work with teaching and will present a retrospective of both her own and her students' films.

As part of the Self-portraits of Animation Creators series we will see the Swedish animator Niki Lindroth von Bahr, winner of the Cristal Award for the best short animation at the Annecy 2017 festival, who will present her animation skills and creative work methods, as well as the German creator Volker Schlecht, whose latest animated film The Waiting was screened at the Berlinale and Cannes festivals.

During the festival, we will also present Wim Wenders' film, Anselm, made in 2023. The screening will be accompanied by a meeting with members of Wenders' film crew, who will also lead practical color grading workshops at Multilab Kraków.

The non-competitive section will feature, among others, the best Romanian animations selected by the Animest festival, female animation from the Visegrad countries, and the latest animated feature films, including: Kék Pelikan, directed by László Csaki, and When Adam Changes, directed by Joël Vaudreuil.

Two evenings in a more relaxed tone will be offered by our partner festivals: the Dutch Kaboom Animated Festival and the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film. Special events will also include exhibitions of works by Niki Lindroth von Bahr, Volker Schlecht, Jacek Złoczowski and Wiola Sowa – they will be available to visit in the ASP Gallery.

The block of industry events under the Creative Lab E&A banner will include script workshops, workshops on virtual reality (with Iwona Pomianowska), object animation (Niki Lindroth von Bahr) and an animation criticism workshop (Nancy Denney-Phelps). As part of the seminars, we will focus on the issue of stereoscopic image processing (Wiola Sowa) and the role of artificial intelligence in film production (Grzegorz Wacławek). In addition: promotions of books on animation, Talent market for students and graduates of art and film schools, case studies zone presenting subsequent stages of film creation and Work in progress zone dedicated to the most interesting projects in the implementation phase.

We invite you to this October week full of unique film creativity!
