We are starting the 31st International Film Festival Etiuda&Anima October 22 - 27, 2024

Added: October 23, 2024

ETIUDA&ANIMA begins another decade of popularizing ambitious and unconventional filmmaking from around the world.

On Tuesday, October 22, the 31st International Film Festival ETIUDA&ANIMA begins in Krakow. The organizers are beginning the fourth decade of the festival's existence by changing both the date (from the previous one, November to October) and the location: most of the events of the upcoming edition will take place in the auditorium of the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts. The event will also be held in the Agrafka and Paradox cinemas, in the Studio Multilab of the Krakow Technology Park and in Apteka Designu.

They will be shown in three competitions: the best short fiction and documentary films from film schools around the world will be presented by the ETIUDA competition, the international ANIMA competition will feature the most interesting professional, student and independent animations, and the ANIMA.PL competition will feature Polish short animated films. Competition screenings will take place in cinemas and on VOD.

Outstanding guests

During this year's edition of the festival, you will be able to meet wonderful artists in person. Three-time Oscar-nominated director and producer Peter Lord, founder of the legendary British studio Aardman, which is home to iconic characters such as Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep, will lead a masterclass entitled "Creating the Magic of Stop-Motion Animation" and present his full-length film "Pirates!".

Winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, the Annecy Crystal and an Oscar nomination, Czech animator Michaela Pavlátová will be awarded the annual prize for an outstanding artist and teacher, i.e. a filmmaker who combines creative work with teaching. The artist will present a retrospective of her animations, as well as the film achievements of her students.

Niki Lindroth von Bahr

As part of the "Self-portraits of Animation Creators" series, the Swedish Niki Lindroth von Bahr, who received, among others, the Crystal for the best short animation at the Annecy 2017 festival, will present her animation skills and methods, as well as the German creator Volker Schlecht, whose latest animated film "The Waiting" visited both the Berlinale and Cannes. The artists will also present their exhibitions: Volker will present sketches and drawings created during the production of the films, while Niki will present incredibly elaborate models, presenting her animal-human characters and the precise scenography surrounding them.

The latest full-length animations

As always, during the festival you will be able to see the latest, full-length animated films, not yet available in Polish cinema distribution. The festival will start with a screening of this year's Latvian candidate for an Oscar - the animation "Flow" by Gints Zilbalodis. This film tells the story of the need for cooperation in a group of accidentally connected characters: in a world flooded by a great flood, a cat, a bird, a lemur, a Labrador, and… a capybara drift together on a boat.

Flow

"The Blue Pelican" tells the story of three young Hungarians who, in the 1990s, use blue ink to forge international train tickets, giving an entire generation the opportunity to travel and explore the world.

"The Adam Changes" is the story of a peculiar fifteen-year-old whose body changes under the influence of mockery and negative comments from those around him. The hero must learn to reconcile many aspects of teenage life, which can be difficult but also beautiful.

"Rock Bottom", in turn, in the form of a long, dreamlike music video, presents a moving love story of a young couple of artists, and at the same time it is a universal story about the great power of art and music, based on the life of British musician Robert Wyatt, known from bands such as Soft Machine, The Wilde Flowers or for his collaboration with Jimi Hendrix. The Gdańsk studio GS Animation was co-responsible for the production.

Europe in short films

As part of the permanent series of presentations of European film achievements, this year we will be able to watch a screening of the best animations from the Trickfilm festival in Stuttgart, and the traditional festival top ten was prepared this year by the ANIMEST festival from Bucharest, thanks to which it will be possible to get to know the 10 best Romanian animations selected by the festival director, Mihai Mitrica.

VR, AI, AUDIO and EKO

The extensive block of industry events under the banner of "Creative Lab E&A" will include a series of workshops, seminars, meetings and exhibitions. In the virtual reality zone, you will be able to immerse yourself in the lives of the residents of Krakow's Kazimierz struggling with the crowds of tourists ("Untershlak - Solids" by the Memorymorph duo), fight digital overstimulation ("Mind's Mirage: The Spectrum of Thought" by Aleksandra Rodobolska-Dudek) or learn the history of the residents of a tenement house ("The Tenement House" by Wiola Sowa). The multi-award-winning project "From the Main Square

Untershlak – Solids

The award-winning project "From the Main Square" by Brazilian Pedro Harres will also be presented, the author of which will also lead a masterclass describing the specifics of creating animations for interactive virtual reality. Doubts related to the use of artificial intelligence in the creative process will be raised by Grzegorz Wacławek as part of the seminar "The End of Individuality: How Does AI Homogenize Art and Animation?"

The extremely interesting seminar "Immersive Reality: The Path to Healing Through Art and Technology" will be led by game and virtual reality designer and psychologist Iwona Pomianowska, and will concern the use of virtual reality in the processes of treatment and therapy. The festival does not forget about the underprivileged: in 2010 it organized the first screenings of films with audio description in Krakow and continues this activity to this day. Thanks to the screenings under the slogan "Pictures Painted with Words", visually impaired people will be able to see the films awarded during the previous edition of ETIUDA&ANIMA.

"Green ETIUDA&ANIMA", a section devoted to ecological topics, will present this year the film "FREM": a unique, experimental documentary by Viera Čákanyová, which is a futuristic portrait of one of the most beautiful and extreme landscapes in the world - King George Island off the coast of Antarctica.

FREM

Festival guests will also lead several attractive workshops: animation criticism (renowned animation critic Nancy Denney-Phelps), script (Alicja Witkowska, Magdalena Wleklik), color correction (Wim Wenders' collaborator Kinga Górak) and object animation (Niki Lindroth von Bahr). In addition: promotions of books on animation, "Talent Market" for students and graduates of art and film schools, "Case studies" zone presenting subsequent stages of film making and "Work in progress" zone devoted to the most interesting projects currently in the implementation phase.
