The film premiered at the 48th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. Polish cinematography has not seen anything like it before. It might be described as a serious comedy or a humorous psychological drama. It combines two contradictory philosophical outlooks on reality. It is about the fear of death, but also about the wish for it, about longing for love, but also about the love of solitude, about the value of life in a multigenerational family, but also about the desire to emancipate from it.
My wit is naturally pure nonsense. Humour brings relief, even katharsis. My dream was to give the audience a film after which they would feel a little freed from everyday worries and burdens, from fear of what they are afraid of every day. I wish that after watching “Fin del Mudno?” they feel better – the way we sometimes feel after good dreams – stresses the director, Piotr Dumała.
Waldi (Andrzej Szeremeta) and his three sisters (Gabriela Muskała, Anna Olejnik, Magdalena Różańska) live in an old villa in the suburbs, and in the cellar live their one-hundred-year-old parents (Helena Norowicz and Stanisław Brudny), who died a few years ago. The family enjoy breakfasts together and domestic warmth, until Waldi discovers supernatural powers in himself. Then unexpected guests (Mariusz Bonaszewski and Antoni Paradowski) draw the family into a top-secret plan, forcing the late parents to pull a few strings in their afterlife. The film is alternately a crime story, melodrama, western and continuously an absurd comedy – which inevitably leads to the end of the world. But does it really?
There is a place by this name in Argentina where the dead in my film go, but it is more of a metaphor from Chekhov, whose dramas take place right before the end of the world of the old Russia. This atmosphere, in the tragicomic sense, fills the universe of my film, and indirectly also the real world, in which we live – the director admits explaining the mysterious title of his latest film.
