We cordially invite you to \"Nuno Beato's Masterclass\" during the 32nd edition of the Etiuda&Anima International Film Festival. The theme is \"Creative work on the feature film and the entire production process of My Grandfather's Demons<\/em><\/strong>\". Admission is free.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


The first 14 minutes use 2D animation but exactly when Rosa steps foot on the dirt of Sarranco Valley, the CG world turns into stop motion. This transformation is a representation of the core of My Grandfather\u2019s Demons<\/em>. Although aesthetically impressive, the 2D animation of the first act is flat and a little too perfect; it doesn\u2019t have the level of detail that the stop motion world has. When we step into Rosa\u2019s hometown, there\u2019s an enhanced realism and everything comes to life in an organic way. The models are not perfect but you can sense the life in them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, the contrast between animated atmospheres is no mistake. My Grandfather\u2019s Demos<\/em> is a tale of community. Rosa is exhausted by the urban way of life and even though she feels discomfort at first (nightmarish demons don\u2019t help her cause), she learns to reconnect with herself and others while in this rural town. She finds peace and starts noticing and enjoying little things that the frantic city life might not allow her to. This is why the stop motion worlds feel so real while the 2D one is a bit lifeless.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Director and producer Nuno Beato will talk about this and other aspects of making the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nuno Beato<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

He began his career early on as an animation film producer and director.
In 1998, Nuno set up the production company Lampadacesa<\/strong>, Lda. after working as a freelance animator for other production companies.In 2007 he co-founded the production company Sardinha em Lata<\/strong>, Lda. with the aim of investing in the internationalization of Portuguese animation cinema.Nuno began his career as a teacher in 2002 on the Volume Animation course at CITEN, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His first feature film: MY GRANDFATHER'S DEMONS<\/strong> has been premiered at Annecy International Film Festival and nominated at Quirino Awards, at Goya Awards in 2023 and has already won a dozen awards at festivals. It had a total budget of 3 million euros. It took 7 years to make with producers from 3 different countrjes, Portugal, Spain and France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
