MA MAMAN EST EN AMÉRIQUE, ELLE A RENCONTRÉ BUFFALO BILL / MY MOMMY IS IN AMERICA AND SHE MET BUFFALO BILL
dir. Marc Boreal, Thibaut Chatel, prod. Label Anim, France, 75’, anim.
In a small provincial town in the 1970s, Jean, a six-year-old, goes to school. When his teacher asks each of her pupils to tell her the profession of their parents, Jean realizes he is not like other children. He has to explain the secret of his mother’s absence…
Whoever read the book “My Mommy Is in America and She Met Buffalo Bill” by Jean Regnaud and Émile Bravo, on which the animated film is based, cannot think about it without both joy and sadness. The story moves hearts because it shows Jean’s everyday life so well – his friends, family, adventures, emotions – and at the same time it portrays a boy with vivid imagination who grows up trying to understand the world around him.
The filmmakers wanted to present the vision of a child’s world using his language. Voices play a crucial role here as recorded dialogues were a starting point for the animation. Other features include natural 2D aesthetics, simple drawing and soft colours without excessive effects or artificial tricks, which would weaken the authentic feel of the story. The film won Special Prize at Annecy International Animated Film Festival. The film will have its Polish première at the IFF Etiuda&Anima 2013.
